Berwyn is a city in Cook County, Illinois and in Berwyn Township which was formed in 1901 after breaking off from Cicero Township. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 54,016.

The racial makeup of the city was 73.44% White, 1.30% African American, 0.44% Native American, 2.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 18.59% from other races, and 3.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38.03% of the population.

There were 19,702 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.45.
